Saxon immigration collection, 1811-1962.

Accumulation of materials created in conjunction with the planning and execution of the emigration of approximately 700 German Lutherans from the Kingdom of Saxony in Germany to Perry County, Mo.; together with court documents brought along from Germany, material gathered by Dr. Walter Forster his dissertation and book, Zion on the Mississippi, and other papers. Pre-emigration series is arranged in alphabetical order to topic and contains transcribed court documents of Martin Stephan, leader of the emigration who was deposed in 1839 for immorality, along with accusations dating back as far as 1811. Emigration series is arranged alphabetically by subject and consists of passenger lists, freight and insurance papers, lists of belongings of various people, diary of T.J. Brohm written during the voyage on the Olbers, and original copy of songs written by Otto Hermann Walther during the voyage. Post-emigration series is arranged in alphabetical order by subject and contains material generated after the arrival of the emigration group in New Orleans, La., in 1839, through the end of the 19th century, including all the papers leading up to the deposition of Pastor Stephen in 1839 and his confession and lawsuit in 1841 which marked the separation of Stephan from the emigration society. Centennial series is arranged in alphabetical order and combines research by Walter Forster and bulletins and publications issued for the 100th anniversary of the Saxon immigration. Correspondence series is the most voluminous part of the collection and is arranged chronologically, much of which consists of handwritten file copies. And financial records series is arranged in chronological order with specific types of records appearing in alphabetical order at the end of the series. It contains all the invoices as well as accounting ledgers (1838-1853). Includes material relating to the ships involved in the emigration, Amalia, Copernicus, Johann Georg, Olbers, Republik, and Selma, and time spent in Saint Louis, Mo., before moving to Perry County, Mo. Persons represented include T.J. Brohm, Johann Friedrich Buenger, H.F. Fischer, Gustav Jaeckel, E.G.W. Keyl, Adolph Marbach, Martin Stephan, Carl Eduard Vehse, C.F.W. Walther, and Otto Hermann Walter.
